Molecular Genetics of Host Response to HIV and HCV

• Dolan et al. (2008) report that cell mediated immune responses are influenced by differences in genes encoding the chemokine CCL3L1 and coreceptor CCR5 in both HIV infected and healthy individuals. CCL3L1-CCR5 genotypes linked to differential cell mediated immune response in healthy individuals were similar to genotypes that affect the risk of HIV transmission, viral load levels, and course of infection. CCL3L1-CCR5 genotypes play a key role in determining cell mediated immunity in HIV infection and can alter HIV pathogenesis. These results suggest that genetic factors may aid in the evaluation of HIV-AIDS patients. Nat Med. 2008 Apr;14(4):413-20. Epub 2008 Mar 30.
