Principal component analyses indicated that the 6 individual variables of lifetime symptom counts of alcohol dependence, illicit drug dependence, childhood conduct disorder, and adult antisocial personality disorder and novelty seeking, sensation seeking loaded on a single externalizing factor. Linkage analyses using the resultant component scores identified a region on chromosome 7 consistent with a gene, CHRM2 that broadly predisposes individuals to externalizing behavior. Analysis of twins in the Virginia twin registry suggests that substantial correlations seen in levels of use of alcohol, caffeine, cannabis, and nicotine are largely the result of social environmental factors in adolescence, with genetic factors becoming progressively more important through early and middle adulthood. Kendler et al Arch Gen Psychiatry. 2008 Jun;65(6):674-82
